What is a martingale collar?

MARTINGALE COLLARS

What is a martingale collar? It is a design of collar that helps prevent a dog from slipping out of their collar. Unlike traditional collars that have to be buckled uncomfortably tight to prevent escape, these collars are loose and comfortable until engaged. Adjusted properly, they never choke, but contract snugly to prevent escape when needed.

Martingale collars are also known as greyhound or whippet collars. The martingale collar was designed for use with sighthounds because their necks are larger than their heads and they can often slip out of buckle collars. These collars are increasingly gaining popularity among other breed owners. They are particularly effective for any breed where the head is smaller than their neck and so are prone to slipping or backing out of their collar. They are also extremely useful for breeds with thick fur around the neck which hinders the secure fastening of traditional buckle collars.

So, how does it work?

A martingale collar is made with two loops. The larger loop is slipped onto the dog’s neck and a leash is then clipped to the D-ring on the smaller loop. When the dog tries to pull, the tension on the leash pulls the small loop taut, which makes the large loop smaller and tighter on the neck, thus preventing escape. This is quite different from choke collars that can strangle your dog – because a martingale collar will instead only tighten from the smaller loupe which is enough to prevent escape but without tightening too much.

How do I fit a martingale collar?

Adjust the collar to its widest measurement and slide over your dog’s head. Once around the neck, readjust the collar to fit around his or her neck like you would with a normal collar, ideally 2-3 finger widths between your dog’s neck and the collar.

Which breeds can wear a martingale collar?

The short answer is; any breed! The greatest benefit of these collars is that the design stops the dog being able to back out of its collar, so if you wish to feel safer when out and about with your pooch, a martingale collar is ideal.

Are they safe?

A martingale collar is designed to be exactly that! They are safe because the function of the two loops means that it is impossible for your dog to choke on them because only the small loop on the front contracts, leaving the larger loop open around the neck.
